Russian forces attempted to launch an offensive in the Dobropillia direction to unblock their encircled troops but suffered losses and were forced to retreat, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a briefing.

According to the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, briefed him today on the situation in the Dobropillia direction.

"Today, Russian forces carried out offensive actions near Volodymyrivka, Shakhivka, and Sofiivka. They wanted to unblock their troops. As of today, they’ve already suffered losses — around 13,000 — so they wanted to unblock them. They suffered losses, retreated, and their equipment was destroyed," Zelenskyy said.

He added that Ukrainian troops are now clearing out Russian soldiers in and around Volodymyrivka.

Dobropillia counteroffensive

In September, Ukrainian forces seized the initiative in the Dobropillia direction and launched a counteroffensive.

Just yesterday, on October 9, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said Ukrainian forces had liberated over 180 square kilometers of territory in the Donetsk region since the start of the operation.

A large area was also cleared of Russian saboteurs.

On September 23, President Zelenskyy told US President Donald Trump in New York that Ukrainian troops had managed to encircle about 1,000 Russian soldiers during the counteroffensive.
