Russia targets Kyiv's energy infrastructure in massive overnight attack – Zelenskyy

The main target of Russia’s combined overnight attack on Ukraine on September 30 was energy infrastructure in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reports.
“It was a difficult attack – nearly 190 attack drones, as well as ballistic missiles. And the main target was energy infrastructure in the capital and the Kyiv region. Residential buildings were also damaged,” Zelenskyy said.
According to the president, crews are working to restore electricity and water supplies wherever they have been disrupted.
In addition, Russian forces struck a grocery supermarket in Ivankovychi with a drone in the morning. Emergency workers are putting out the fire.
Kyiv has also been under drone attack since the morning. A warehouse building was hit, killing one person.
Critical infrastructure was also hit in the Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad and Rivne regions. Damage was reported in the Odesa, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson and Cherkasy regions.
As of now, 14 people have been injured across the country in the attacks. Five people were killed, including a child.
“Our defenders managed to shoot down some of the ballistic missiles. But unfortunately, there were also hits. In recent days, there have been new air defense support packages – I thank our partners for the missiles, and everyone who honors our agreements and strengthens the protection of our skies. This is exactly how we must continue to work,” the president said.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi said that since the summer, there had been virtually no day when Russian forces did not attack Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
However, this was the first attack of such scale and complexity since the end of the previous heating season.
The overnight attack damaged and destroyed energy infrastructure. The prime minister said he was awaiting a detailed report on the condition of the equipment and the timeline for repairs.
“Local authorities must check the readiness of backup power systems for critical facilities in communities and complete all installation and connection work as soon as possible,” Koretskyi added.
September 30 attack on Ukraine
As reported earlier, Russian forces attacked Ukraine overnight with anti-ship and ballistic missiles, as well as attack drones. Ukrainian air defenses managed to destroy most of the incoming targets, but some strikes hit their targets.
Russia also attacked Kyiv with ballistic missiles and drones.
Two women were killed in the attack, while four other people were injured.
Fires broke out in four districts of the capital — Podilskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Holosiivskyi and Solomianskyi. Emergency crews extinguished all the fires.
In the Kyiv region, residential buildings were damaged and destroyed in the attack. A child was killed and several people were injured.
