Russia's Omsk oil refinery engulfed in flames after powerful explosion
A massive explosion has occurred at the Gazpromneft-Omsk refinery in Omsk. The plant is located 2,000 kilometers away from the border with Ukraine, according to 112 Telegram channel.
A strong explosion and fire engulfed the AVT-11 unit. Eyewitnesses say that the explosion was heard in several parts of the city.
“The fire area is 1000 square meters. There are 15 fire brigades at the scene. The enterprise was not evacuated,” the statement said.
Two people were injured in the fire at the Omsk oil refinery and were treated on the spot, the company's press service said.
The Omsk oil refinery is one of the largest oil refineries in Russia, located in the city of Omsk and owned by Gazprom Neft. The plant employs 3,600 people.
In total, the plant produces about 50 types of petroleum products: high-octane gasoline, diesel and marine fuel, jet fuel, bitumen, household gas, industrial sulfur, and other products for the Russian army.
Ukraine started using drones to strike Russian refineries and oil depots in 2024 to reduce the enemy's military potential.
According to British intelligence, the Russian authorities are trying to balance protecting factories in the country's interior and troops on the front line. Priority is given to the military, not civilians.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that Ukraine knows the peculiarities of Russian air defense because it strikes air bases and energy. According to him, there is air defense around Putin's dachas, around Moscow, in St. Petersburg, but there is no air defense in ordinary towns and cities.
