Ukraine's victory in the war is the best guarantee of security for Europe. Russia's imperial ambitions should be consigned to the dustbin of history, according to Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

According to Borrell, the world is once again hearing statements that Ukraine allegedly cannot win the war against Russia, and therefore the countries should reconcile.

"These ideas were wrong in 2022, and they remain wrong today. We should not allow them to shape our policy towards Ukraine," he explains.

In particular, Borrell adds that Ukraine's victory in confronting Russian aggression is the best guarantee of security for Europe, as after the war Russia will reduce pressure on its neighbors, ease Kyiv's path to EU membership, and allow Europe and the world to turn its attention to many other challenges.

"With our help, Ukraine can send Russia's imperial ambitions to the dustbin of history. This is what should guide our actions and our thoughts," adds the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Negotiations with Russia

Last year, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy approved the National Security and Defense Council's decision to hold talks with dictator Vladimir Putin.

To resume negotiations, Russia must:

  • leave the territory of Ukraine;
  • change the political elite;
  • recognize war crimes;
  • extradite the organizers of the war to the tribunal.

Recently, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba assured that Western allies are not demanding that Kyiv start negotiations with Russia to freeze the fighting.
