Russian diesel shipments are returning to their main former customers following the lifting of an export ban brokered by the US, according to Reuters.

Russia ships diesel to Brazil and Türkiye

According to Kpler and LSEG data, at least two tankers have signaled voyages to Türkiye and Brazil in recent days, the outlet reports.

According to the data, the tanker Leruo, which departed from Russia's Baltic port of Primorsk on October 16, is signaling Manaus, Brazil, as its destination.

This followed the tanker Dolunay, which left Primorsk on October 14 carrying diesel and is heading to Alanya, Türkiye.

According to Kpler data, Türkiye has received about 34% of Russian diesel fuel this year, equivalent to 95,000 barrels per day.

Brazil received 24% of Russian diesel exports, or 66,000 barrels per day.

Russia exports diesel

Russia was the world's second-largest diesel exporter after the US. However, it reduced its exports during the summer before imposing a ban on overseas shipments. This followed large-scale Ukrainian attacks on its oil refineries.

Türkiye and Brazil have been the two largest buyers of Russian diesel fuel since 2023, when Western sanctions imposed in response to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine reshaped Russian oil export routes.

Türkiye plans to purchase some of the diesel fuel Russia will supply to global markets under agreements with US President Donald Trump.

In addition, the US recently temporarily eased sanctions restrictions on Russian diesel fuel.

The US Treasury Department issued a license allowing its supply until April 7, 2027. As a result, Russia could return to the global market with millions of tons of fuel.
