Russia may stage offensive near Chernihiv, border guards explain goal

No attempts by Russian forces to breach the border in Ukraine's Chernihiv region have been detected so far. However, Russia could use this direction for another purpose, the spokesperson for Ukraine's State Border Guard Service Andriy Demchenko said.
According to Demchenko, Ukraine's General Staff had previously reported intelligence indicating that Russia could use the Chernihiv direction in a possible invasion.
At the same time, even without sufficient forces to launch an offensive, Russia may resort to demonstrative actions.
"Even without sufficient forces, the enemy may carry out demonstrative actions to force Ukraine to redeploy additional troops to this direction instead of using them in more critical areas," the State Border Guard Service spokesperson explained.
He stressed that border guards have not detected any attempts by Russian infantry groups to cross the state border, nor have they observed any activity by Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups.
Nevertheless, Demchenko warned that Ukraine cannot afford to let its guard down, as Russia remains a deceptive and unpredictable enemy.
Earlier, Ukraine's National Guard reported that Russian forces had changed their offensive tactics.
Instead of launching large-scale mechanized assaults, Russian troops are increasingly relying on small infantry groups that quietly gather near Ukrainian positions before attacking.
