Russia loses 300,000 troops in Ukraine as Moscow plans mobilization of the same number

Since the beginning of 2026, the Russian army has lost more than 300,000 soldiers, killed and wounded, in Ukraine. This scale of losses is equivalent to the personnel of nearly 150 Russian motorized rifle regiments, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
It is reported that since the beginning of the year, the Russian army has lost 301,030 soldiers, killed and wounded.
"To understand the scale, this number is comparable to the personnel of nearly 150 motorized rifle regiments, assuming a strength of about 2,000 service members per regiment," the statement said.
The General Staff emphasized that such significant enemy losses were the result of the effective combat operations of all components of Ukraine's Defense Forces.
Russian forces suffered their heaviest losses this year during the three summer months. In total, the Defense Forces neutralized 124,170 Russian service members over the summer:

In July – 42,860;

In August – 42,020.
Enemy losses remain high this month as well. As of the morning of September 15, Russian forces had already lost 20,360 personnel.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently said that after the end of the elections to Russia's State Duma, Ukraine expects new developments, including the possible mobilization of at least 300,000 Russian soldiers.
The president said that Russia's infrastructure is already prepared for the mobilization, although it remains unclear whether it will be carried out covertly or openly.
In addition, Oleh Ivashchenko, head of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, said that Russian generals had requested nearly 800,000 more troops to continue the war against Ukraine.
At the same time, he said that in reality, the Russian army can absorb no more than 300,000–500,000 new recruits at a time.
