Russia launches 57 drones and North Korean missiles at Ukraine: How air defense performed
On August 11, Russia launched 57 suicide drones and used North Korean ballistic missiles against Ukraine. Air defense forces destroyed nearly all of the drones, according to the Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, Mykola Oleshchuk, on Telegram.
He noted that the enemy launched four North Korean KN-23 ballistic missiles from the Voronezh region. Additionally, 57 Shahed drones were fired from Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Yeisk, and Kursk.
The attack was countered by mobile fire groups, aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, and electronic warfare systems. Air defense forces destroyed 53 enemy drones.
Air defense was active in Mykolaiv, Odesa, Cherkasy, Vinnytsia, Kirovohrad, Kherson, Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Rivne, and Cherkasy regions.
"Regarding Russian strikes with North Korean missiles, I would say the following: KN-23 ballistic missiles, although rarely hitting their intended targets, pose a serious threat to the population," Oleshchuk added.
What is known about the consequences of the Russian attack
In several regions of Ukraine, air alerts were declared on the night of August 11 due to the threat of ballistic missiles and drones. Specifically, Kyiv experienced two air raid sirens during the night, but there were no direct hits in the capital.
Enemy Shaheds were intercepted not only at night but also in the morning. In particular, in Poltava region, the alert lasted for 14 hours.
In Kyiv region, there were casualties as a result of the Russian attack. It is known that debris from a North Korean missile fell on private houses in Brovary district. A 35-year-old man and his four-year-old son were killed. Three others were injured — a 45-year-old man, a 53-year-old woman, and a 12-year-old boy — and were hospitalized.
