During the day, reports began to spread online that Russia had allegedly struck Mykolaiv with a guided aerial bomb with a range of 150 km. The Ukrainian Air Force revealed details of the Russian attack.

Social media reports indicate that the Russian air target allegedly flew over 150 km at a speed of up to 500 km/h.

However, the Ukrainian Air Force reported that at around noon Kyiv time on October 16, a launch from a Russian Su-34 aircraft was recorded from the Black Sea.

"At around noon on October 16, a launch from a Su-34 aircraft was recorded from the Black Sea. The air attack was directed towards the city of Mykolaiv," the Ukrainian Air Force says.

The crash site has been identified, with no casualties reported so far. The relevant services are working at the site to determine the type of aircraft weapon.

Shooting down Russian aerial bombs

In February this year, Russians attacked Zaporizhzhia with guided aerial bombs.

After that, Yurii Ihnat, head of communications for the Ukrainian Air Force Command, said that Ukrainian soldiers managed to shoot down the guided aerial bomb during the attack. He noted that this was not the first case of Ukrainian defenders destroying guided aerial bombs.

On October 15, it became known that Ukraine is working on countering Russian guided aerial bombs. To this end, several companies are developing special interceptor drones.

Ukraine wrote scenarios for how guided aerial bombs are used and outlined the result it would like to achieve. After that, 40 applications were received. They were reviewed by a jury of NATO experts and experts from Ukraine who are involved in countering guided aerial bombs.
