Russia destroyed Kurakhove reservoir dam: Latest
No flooded houses have been reported at the Kurakhove reservoir, where water arrives downstream of the damaged Terny dam. However, due to constant Russian shelling, it has not yet been possible to inspect the hydraulic structure, says Roman Padun, head of the Kurakhove City Military Administration.
“We have not been able to go and inspect the dam. Water continues to arrive below the Terny dam. I contacted my colleagues. There is no critical situation, there are no flooded houses yet,” he says.
According to the head of the Kurakhove City Military Administration, Russian troops have been trying to damage the dam for three months, but there is no threat of a complete water leakage from the reservoir.
“Perhaps it is partially damaged, one of the locks. Because Russia has been trying to hit the dam with guided aerial bombs for the past 3 months,” Padun says.
He also explains that the dam's design allows it to maintain a certain water level even when damaged.
“The dam is designed in such a way that the entire mirror of the reservoir cannot merge. There is a critical level of the reservoir that can be drained, and there is the level that remains,” he adds.
