Russia is rapidly increasing its military capabilities. The country could be ready to attack NATO within five years, stated NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during a speech at Chatham House.

Rutte said Russia is rebuilding its armed forces using Chinese technology and is producing weapons at a pace faster than NATO thought. According to him, Russia now manufactures in three months what the whole of NATO produces in a year.

He added that forecasts for this year alone estimate Russia will produce 1,500 tanks, 3,000 armored personnel carriers, and 200 Iskander missiles

"Russia could be ready to use military force against NATO within five years," Rutte stated.

The Secretary General pointed out that all NATO countries are now on the eastern flank.

"The new generation of Russian missiles travels at many times the speed of sound. The distance between European capitals is only a matter of minutes. There is no longer East or West – there is just NATO," he added.

Threat to NATO

Just today, June 9, Secretary General Mark Rutte said that NATO countries are planning to boost their air and anti-tank defenses by 400%.

He said this is because of the threat from Russia, which attacked Ukraine.
