Russia attacks Ukraine with drones and 41 missiles: How air defenses repelled the overnight assault

During the night of July 19, Russia attacked Ukraine with 41 missiles and 125 attack drones. Ukraine's air defenses intercepted most of the incoming targets, including nearly all of the ballistic missiles, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.
Kyiv was the primary target of the attack.
In total, the Air Force detected 166 aerial attack weapons — 41 missiles and 125 drones of various types:
- 10 3M22 Zircon anti-ship missiles (launched from Russia's Kursk region);
- 25 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles (launched from Russia's Bryansk and Kursk regions);
- 3 Oniks anti-ship missiles (launched from temporarily occupied Crimea);
- 3 Kh-59/69 guided air-launched missiles (launched from airspace over the Black Sea);
- 125 Shahed attack drones, Gerbera and Italmas drones, Parodiya decoy drones, and Banderol loitering munitions (launched from Kursk, Oryol, and Millerovo in Russia, as well as Hvardiiske in temporarily occupied Crimea).
According to preliminary data as of 8:30 a.m., Ukraine's air defenses intercepted or suppressed 126 aerial targets — 18 missiles and 108 drones of various types.
These included:
- 17 Iskander-M, Zircon, and S-400 missiles;
- 1 Kh-59/69 guided air-launched missile;
- 108 drones of various types.
According to preliminary information available as of 8:30 a.m., 23 missiles and 10 attack drones struck targets at 20 locations. Debris from intercepted drones also fell at 18 locations.
Attack on Kyiv on July 19
As previously reported, Russia launched a massive ballistic missile attack on Kyiv overnight on July 19. Residential buildings were damaged and fires broke out in several districts of the capital.
One person was killed in the attack, while 15 others were reported injured.
