Russia attacked Ukraine with missiles and 136 UAVs: Air defense response
On the night of October 16, Ukraine was once again subjected to a large-scale attack by Russia. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted two missiles and 51 enemy attack drones, citing the Ukrainian Air Force.
During the night, Russia launched the following at Ukraine:
- A guided S-300/400 missile targeted at Ukrainian-controlled territory in the Donetsk region;
- An air-launched Kh-59 missile targeting the Chernihiv region from Russian airspace over the Kursk region;
- 136 attack drones (with launch sites in Kursk, Oryol, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk).
To repel the attack, the following forces were engaged:
- Aviation units;
- Anti-aircraft missile troops;
- Electronic warfare (EW) units;
- Mobile fire teams from Ukraine’s Air Force and Defense Forces.
While repelling the attack, 51 enemy drones were shot down across the Sumy, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, Ternopil, Kherson, Kharkiv, Zhytomyr, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Kyiv, Poltava, Chernihiv, and Chernivtsi regions.
Due to the active use of EW, signals were lost from 60 Russian drones across various regions of Ukraine, with further details being clarified.
Additionally, two enemy drones turned back toward Russia.
More than 20 drones remain in Ukrainian airspace, with ongoing combat operations.
Night drone attack
On Tuesday, October 15, Russians launched a large-scale drone assault on Ukraine using Shahed-type drones.
Later, an air raid alert was issued in Kyiv, and air defense forces were deployed in the capital.
The enemy drone attack is still ongoing, with targets over several regions, and air defense units continue to intercept them.
In particular, enemy drones are targeting the Kyiv region.
Additionally, Russia has deployed warships equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles into the sea.
