US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington is concerned about a possible escalation in the situation around the Baltic states following new accusations from Russia, according to The Guardian.

During a conversation with journalists, Rubio was asked to comment on Russian claims that the Baltic states were allegedly preparing joint drone attacks with Ukraine against Russian territory. In response, the State Department chief said such signals raise concern due to the risk of further escalation.

"It’s a concerning thing, because you always worry that something like that can spark into something bigger," Rubio said.

According to him, the Baltic states have reason to feel threatened by Russia’s actions, and the US is closely monitoring the situation. Rubio also said Washington is working with NATO on the issue.

"We don’t want it to lead to some broader conflict that can really lead to something far worse,” the US Secretary of State stressed.

Earlier, it was reported that several NATO countries are secretly developing scenarios for possible action in case the US withdraws from the Alliance or blocks collective defense mechanisms.

It was also reported that Russia claimed Ukraine was allegedly preparing strikes against Russia from Latvian territory. Both Riga and Kyiv have firmly denied this information.
