Rubio surprised by global reaction to Trump’s Ukraine peace initiatives

According to Rubio, the United States is "the only country on Earth" that has managed to bring both sides to the negotiating table.

He also criticized international institutions, particularly the UN, saying that "there is no other country in Europe that has been able to do this."

The Secretary of State stressed that instead of supporting Washington’s efforts, part of the international community is criticizing Trump for trying to help end the war.

"This is one of the few wars I've ever seen where some people in the international community condemn you for trying to help end a war," Rubio said.

He added that the United States will continue to participate in the peace process as long as its role remains positive and constructive.

US peace plan for Ukraine

Last November, the United States proposed a 28-point peace plan to Ukraine.

The document envisaged significant concessions by Kyiv in favor of Russia, which led to criticism both in Kyiv and from European partners. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy even addressed Ukrainians over the issue.

Following this, a series of consultations took place with the participation of representatives from Ukraine and EU countries. As a result, the plan was revised and reduced to around 20 points. The updated version became more acceptable to the Ukrainian side.

Recently, in an interview with The Guardian, Zelenskyy said that the American president is seeking to quickly conclude a large-scale peace agreement on the war in Ukraine.

At the same time, according to the head of state, the key issue remains the phased implementation of the agreements.

Meanwhile, Politico reported on its own view of Trump’s strategy toward Ukraine, publishing a piece about his possible plan of action.
