US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, according to the US Department of State.

Spokesperson Tommy Pigott confirmed that the meeting went ahead as planned. During the talks, a set of conditions was presented to the Russian minister.

"Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The Secretary reiterated President Trump’s call for the killing to stop and the need for Moscow to take meaningful steps toward a durable resolution of the Russia-Ukraine war," the statement says.

Reports of a possible Rubio-Lavrov meeting had surfaced earlier, including in the official public schedule of the US Secretary of State.

Trump’s UN speech

US President Donald Trump, speaking at the UN General Assembly, said that Ukraine can fully restore its territorial integrity and then "go even further". He also called Russia a "paper tiger" and voiced his deep disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In Russia, Trump’s remarks triggered outrage. Meanwhile, shares of European defense companies surged following the US President’s comments. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Trump’s statement at the UN shows that the American President will support Ukraine until the very end.
