The topic of the meeting between the representatives of the two countries is still unclear. At least, there has been no mention of it in the media yet.

At the same time, CNN notes that their meeting will take place after US President Donald Trump said the day before that Ukraine could regain its territories and even go further. The agency adds that this is a significant change from Trump's previous attitude toward Moscow.

Rubio and Lavrov last met on the sidelines of the ASEAN meeting in July. At that time, during a frank conversation, the secretary of state conveyed Trump's disappointment to the Russian foreign minister.

Rubio at UN Security Council

The US Secretary of State told the UN Security Council that the war in Ukraine cannot be ended by military means, adding that it will end through diplomacy at the negotiating table.

At the same time, he made it clear that US President Donald Trump's patience is not unlimited and that there may come a time when Washington decides that Russia has no interest in a peaceful solution.

He added that Trump has the ability and options for sanctions against Russia, and that the US President has the weapons to defend Ukraine from Russian attacks.
