US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that US President Donald Trump did not impose new sanctions on Russia, as it could mean extending the war in Ukraine by "another two years," informs Rapid Response 47.

During an appearance on NBC News, the host asked the official why Trump had not introduced sanctions against Russia. Rubio responded that such a move could prolong the war in Ukraine.

"We are still hoping to see that this effort works out in diplomacy, and that we can bring these two sides closer together. I mean, the minute you start doing that kind of stuff, you're walking away from it. You've now doomed yourself to another two years of war, and we don't want to see it happen," said the Secretary of State.

He emphasized that there is no other country, institution, or organization in the world capable of uniting both sides. Only the US is talking to both Kyiv and Moscow.

"No one else in the world can make something like this happen but the President (Trump ed.). This is a very significant responsibility and a really important opportunity, and we want to make sure that we work it all the way through, that we don't walk away from something that can actually work or that can actually lead to peace, but we also don't want to continue to spend time on something that's not going to get us there," Rubio explained.

The Secretary of State added that throughout this process, the US is assessing whether both sides genuinely want peace and how close or far apart they are after 90 days of efforts and work.

"That's what we're trying to determine this week. There are reasons to be optimistic, and there are also reasons to be concerned. It's complicated. If this were an easy war to end, it would have been ended by someone else a long time ago. But right now, the only one who can bring these two sides together to end this war is our President, President Trump," the American official concluded.

Trump indirectly addressed Putin

Yesterday, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended the funeral of Pope Francis in the Vatican. Before the ceremony, they held a one-on-one meeting.

Later that day, Trump posted on his social media. In it, he suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin is "just tapping him along" and does not want to end the war in Ukraine. In the next sentence, he implied that perhaps the Kremlin leader should be dealt with differently, specifically through sanctions.
