US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a phone conversation. They discussed Russia’s war against Ukraine, according to a statement from State Department Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott.

"Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke today with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss next steps following the October 16 call between President Trump and President Putin," Piggott said.

According to him, Rubio emphasized the importance of upcoming meetings as an opportunity for Moscow and Washington to work together to achieve a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine "in line with President Trump’s vision."

Trump–Putin phone call

Last week US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

After the call, Trump said that high-level advisor talks would take place next week. The US delegation would be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, while the location of the meeting has not yet been determined.

The US leader also stated that he plans to meet with Putin in Budapest to discuss the possibility of ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.

In addition, Trump emphasized that trade relations between Russia and the US after the end of the war in Ukraine were also discussed.

Earlier today, on October 20, rumors appeared in Western media that Rubio is expected to meet with Lavrov on Thursday, October 23. This information has not yet been officially confirmed.
