US has begun the process of shutting down the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Some of the agency's programs have been transferred under the control of the State Department, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported.

"Since January, we've saved the taxpayers tens of billions of dollars. And with a small set of core programs moved over to the State Department, USAID is officially in close out mode," Rubio wrote.

He specified that the closure process of the agency is headed by Russell Vought, Director of the Administrative and Budget Office of the US State Department.

According to Rubio, the USAID agency has long since gone out of control.

USAID

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is an independent US government agency established in 1961, responsible for providing economic, humanitarian, and technical assistance worldwide. Its core mission is to promote international development, strengthen democratic institutions, support healthcare, education, and economic growth in partner countries.

Ukraine became one of the largest recipients of USAID assistance after Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. Since then, the agency has directed billions of dollars toward supporting critical infrastructure, paying social benefits, funding education and healthcare, as well as humanitarian programs for internally displaced persons.

On July 2, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Washington was halting all USAID projects. He explained this by saying that the agency's results after the end of the Cold War were extremely limited.
