Roof collapse at nightclub in Dominican Republic: 98 dead, including politicians and athletes

In the Dominican Republic, the roof of a nightclub collapsed in the capital, Santo Domingo, resulting in the deaths of 98 people. Among the victims were politicians and athletes, the news agency AP reports.
On the night of Wednesday, April 9, the tragic incident occurred in the capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, when the roof of the iconic Jet Set nightclub collapsed during a merengue concert.
According to the latest information, at least 98 people were killed in the disaster, and more than 160 were injured.
Rescue teams continue to work at the scene of the tragedy, sifting through the rubble and searching for possible survivors.
Special attention is being given to three areas of the club, where sounds are heard from beneath the debris. In collaboration with firefighters and other services, the teams are using specialized equipment to extract people trapped under the ruins.
Among the victims were politicians and famous athletes, including Nelsy Cruz, the governor of the northwestern province of Montecristi, and seven-time Major League Baseball All-Star Nelson Cruz.
Nelsy Cruz managed to contact President Luis Abinader before disappearing from sight. It has been officially confirmed that Cruz died from her injuries in the hospital.
The tragedy occurred during a concert attended by numerous guests, including former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel and baseball player Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera.
Rescue teams continue to dig through the rubble, searching for possible survivors. Among the injured are also national lawmaker Bray Vargas and famous singer Rubby Pérez, whose fate is currently unknown.
President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and promised that rescue services would work continuously to assist the victims.
Officials have yet to determine the cause of the roof collapse, and the investigation is ongoing.
Earlier, on March 16, a fire broke out during a concert in North Macedonia, resulting in at least 50 deaths. The tragedy occurred in a nightclub.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of North Macedonia, at least 51 people died, and more than 100 were injured due to a massive fire at the Pulse nightclub in the city of Kočani.
Furthermore, in Thailand, a nightclub in Chonburi province caught fire. Due to the tragedy, at least 13 people died, and about 40 others were injured.
