Romanian politician Călin Georgescu, who won the canceled first round of the presidential election, said that he considers the “Romanian lands in Ukraine” becoming part of Romania purely theoretically. In his opinion, Romanian politicians have the right to discuss this, reports Digi24.

Georgescu said that he was referring to an “absolutely theoretical hypothesis” regarding his controversial statements about the split of Ukraine, and that “100% the borders will change” and that Romania can claim part of the territory of Ukraine. However, several politicians later criticized Georgescu for these statements.

“First of all, we are talking about a political class, so to speak, that is very hypocritical and duplicitous (...). I'm amazed that they are so short-sighted and functionally illiterate, although I was talking about a very simple thing, by the way. We have to learn from our historical experience. The world is changing,” Georgescu said.

He added that he spoke about the split of Ukraine as “an absolutely theoretical hypothesis” and called the politicians who criticized his statements “short-sighted.”

“We have to learn from our historical experience. Now the world is changing... At that time, if we talk about the period of the Second World War, we made many mistakes, we did not really understand how to position ourselves. And Great Romania became Little Romania. This is the reality,” Georgescu said.

How the presidential election in Romania was canceled because of Georgescu

In the November 2024 presidential election, independent candidate Georgescu unexpectedly won the first round with 23%. He is considered a far-right pro-Russian politician, and the Office of the President of Romania has alleged external interference in the election.

The Constitutional Court annulled the results due to illegal funding and alleged Russian influence. New elections are scheduled for May 4, 2025, and Georgescu's participation depends on the court's decision on his disqualification.
