Romania tightens military defenses after blast at factory

Romania’s Minister of Economy, Radu Miruță, announced the strengthening of security measures at military infrastructure sites following an incident at the Cujir Mechanical Plant last weekend, according to his Facebook post.
He said he issued an order reinstating the mandatory requirement to obtain permission from the Ministry of Economy and security service checks to access arms factories and warehouses. He reminded that this requirement had been lifted in January 2025.
According to him, he also instructed an urgent update of all security plans for defense infrastructure facilities, storage areas, and production zones.
“If there’s still any director (hopefully not) who thinks that a factory producing ammunition or firearms should be run like an ice cream machine, I suggest they take this window of opportunity and resign voluntarily,” Miruță added.
A few days ago, a massive fire broke out at a local plant in the city of Cugir, Romania, which manufactures small arms. Law enforcement authorities are not ruling out the possibility of sabotage at the facility.
