Romania scrambled fighter jets to intercept unknown drone
On Thursday, Romania scrambled four fighter jets after a small flying object, likely a drone, breached the national airspace up to 14 kilometers into the country in the southeastern county of Constanța, reports Reuters.
"The radar signal indicated Romania’s land border was crossed at around 1600 GMT," the Romanian Ministry of Defense stated, adding that the drone was first detected flying towards Romania over the Black Sea.
Romania deployed two F-16 fighters and two Spanish F-18s, which will conduct airspace patrol missions until the end of the year. The pilots did not spot the drone. Residents of Constanța County were advised to take cover.
Late on October 16, air raid alerts were declared in several regions of Ukraine due to the threat posed by Shahed drones.
Explosions were heard in Kyiv as air defense systems engaged to repel the enemy attack.
It was later reported that a residential building was damaged in the Kyiv region as a result of the attack, but there were no casualties.
