Romanian F-16 destroys sea drone
According to the ministry, two Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jets were urgently scrambled on August 20 after a small sea drone was detected in Romania’s exclusive economic zone near the Neptun Alpha platform.
One of the aircraft engaged the target using its onboard cannon. The drone, which was drifting at sea, was spotted by a commercial vessel at around 6:28 a.m. local time.
A coast guard vessel carrying a Romanian Navy explosive ordnance disposal team is heading to the drone’s location. The operation to neutralize the drone is still underway.
Foreign drones in Romania
Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that on the night of August 20, a drone entered Romanian airspace and crashed in Tulcea County, near the border with Ukraine.
It was also reported that a Spanish F-18 fighter jet shot down a drone that had illegally entered Romanian airspace. The country's Ministry of Defense did not officially specify the drone's origin.
In addition, Romania shot down three drones in just three days at the end of July, spending €1.5 million on the operations.
