Due to busy schedules and overcrowded gyms, many people are opting for evening workouts. However, this can be harmful to health, citing Wales Online.

According to sleep expert Adeel Ul-Haq, exercising in the evening could be detrimental to your health if you're heading to the gym late in the day.

"Light exercises before bedtime may help you fall asleep quicker and spend more time in deep sleep. However, going to the gym and performing high-intensity exercises like weight training has the opposite effect," he said.

Research shows that evening workouts can reduce overall sleep quality, especially if done within an hour of going to bed.

"If you plan to go to bed by 10 PM, you should at the latest start a 90-minute workout by 6:30 PM to avoid poor sleep quality. Ideally, it's best to have at least a two-hour gap between your workout and bedtime, this gives your endorphins, adrenaline, and body temperature time to drop to levels that help you rest better," Adeel explained.

Keep in mind that poor sleep quality can lead to a range of health problems, including a weakened immune system, lack of focus, and even more serious conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

If you still want to work out later in the evening, try opting for less strenuous exercises.

"While everyone is different, the key here is not to raise your heart rate too much as this can stimulate your nervous system and make it difficult to fall asleep. You should still leave at least a 2-hour window between exercising and sleeping to give your body the chance to wind down," the expert concluded.
