57-year-old Steve Scalise has become a candidate for the position of Speaker of the United States House of Representatives (the lower chamber of Congress), according to CNN.

According to the sources, in the voting results, Steve Scalise received 113 votes, while his competitor and Trump supporter, Jim Jordan, received 99 votes. To become the new Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Scalise needs to secure a majority of votes in the lower chamber of Congress (217 votes).

What is known about Scalise

Scalise was the top contender for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives following Kevin McCarthy's resignation. He is the second-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives.

Scalise is more conservative than McCarthy and also supports aid to Ukraine in its war against Russia.

If elected as Speaker, he will hold the position until January 2025, unless he is compelled to resign.

Recall that McCarthy was forced to resign on October 3 as a result of a vote in the House of Representatives.
