Republican members of Congress have introduced a bill proposing the withdrawal of the United States from the United Nations. Lawmakers plan to present the document in the US House of Representatives, Fox News reports.

On Thursday, February 20, Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) introduced a bill titled the Disengaging Entirely From the United Nations Debacle Act of 2025. The proposal calls for the complete termination of US membership in the UN and its affiliated agencies, as well as an end to US funding for these organizations.

Senator Chip Roy (R-Texas) is prepared to introduce the bill in the House of Representatives.

"The United Nations has devolved into a platform for tyrants and a venue to attack America and her allies," Mike Lee said in an interview with Fox News.

Roy, in turn, accused the UN of corruption and that the organization "has, for decades, failed to prevent wars, genocides, human rights violations and even pandemics."

Republicans Mike Rogers of Alabama, Eli Crane of Arizona, Diana Harshbarger of Tennessee, Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, Harriet Hageman of Wyoming, Josh Brecheen of Oklahoma, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia co-sponsored the bill.

According to the legislation, the US would also be prohibited from participating in peace negotiations led by the UN and would bar the executive branch from entering any agreements regarding UN membership or involvement in its affiliated organizations without Senate approval.

Trump and UN

US President Donald Trump was a vocal critic of the UN even before his election and did not rule out withdrawing the US from the organization.

On February 4, Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the US from the UN Human Rights Council and continued the suspension of funding for the Palestinian UN relief agency UNRWA.

Earlier, in January 2024, former US President Joe Biden also cut funding for UNRWA after Israel accused 12 out of 13,000 agency employees in Gaza of participating in Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack.
