Record turnout in Moldova's presidential election: Over 1.5 million people voted
Today, Moldova is holding the second round of presidential elections. The turnout at the polls has exceeded 50% and is a record, states NewsMaker.
According to the Central Election Commission (CEC), more than 1.5 million Moldovan citizens have already voted in the second round of the presidential election. To be more precise, 1,522,974 voters have made their choice, or 50%.
According to iData, the turnout in the second round exceeded the turnout in the 2020 presidential election. In addition, today the turnout at polling stations abroad is more than 258 thousand people, which is already more than the number of people who voted in the first round on the entire election day a few weeks ago.
NewsMaker clarifies that the most active voters are citizens aged 66-75, and the least active are young people aged 18-25. But despite this, all age groups recorded an increased turnout. A high turnout was also observed among citizens living in Transnistria, namely 23,294 people.
Elections in Moldova
The main contenders for the presidency are incumbent President Maia Sandu and former Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo, who is considered pro-Russian. In the first round, Sandu won 42.49% of the vote, while Stoianoglo received 25.95%. Due to the fact that the incumbent president did not overcome the 50% mark, a second round of presidential elections was scheduled in the country.
Police in Moldova recorded organized transportation of voters to polling stations. Such cases were noticed in the country and abroad.
Earlier it was reported that on the eve of the presidential election, citizens of the Moldovan state were brought from Russia to Moldova to vote in the elections free of charge for air travel and community buses.
