US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Anchorage, Alaska, according to CNN.

According to CNN, the US faced a challenge as Alaska is currently at the peak of its tourist season. This greatly limited the available and suitably equipped venues for hosting two world leaders.

CNN reports that the organizers concluded that Anchorage is the only city in Alaska with viable options for the summit.

“And only Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, on the northern edge of the city, would meet the requirements for the historic meeting, though the White House had hoped to avoid the optics of hosting the Russian leader and his entourage on a US military installation,” the outlet wrote, citing White House sources.

Anchorage

Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city, situated on the shores of Cook Inlet and surrounded by the Chugach Mountains. It serves as the state’s economic and transport hub, connecting Asia and North America by air.

The city enjoys a milder climate than many other parts of Alaska, making it comfortable for living and tourism.

Previously, it was reported that on August 14, massive protests are planned in Anchorage against the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump–Putin meeting

This Friday, August 15, US President Donald Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska.

Trump said he plans to discuss ways to resolve Russia’s war against Ukraine and to urge Putin to cease hostilities.

According to Trump, he hopes to negotiate a territorial exchange between Ukraine and Russia with Putin, but emphasized that any final agreement on Ukraine must be reached directly between Kyiv and Moscow.

Amid these developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine will not hand over Donbas to Russia.

It was also revealed that ahead of the Putin meeting, Trump will hold an online conversation with Zelenskyy and other European leaders.
