A special envoy of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Kirill Dmitriev, is set to travel to Miami on Saturday. He will hold a series of meetings with members of US President Donald Trump’s administration, Reuters reports.

According to the agency’s sources, the meetings will be working-level discussions, but the agenda has not been officially disclosed.

At the same time, the very fact of the Russian envoy’s visit to the United States has drawn attention, given the lack of publicly announced high-level diplomatic contacts between the two countries.

Dmitriev is known as one of the Kremlin’s key negotiators on international economic and investment issues and as a figure repeatedly involved in non-public communication channels with the West.

Trump–Putin meeting

According to some reports, during a meeting in Anchorage, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump discussed the management of the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. The possibility of joint US-Russian control over the facility, without Ukraine’s involvement, was reportedly considered.

Putin has repeatedly referred to the Anchorage agreements during discussions of a peace deal with Ukraine. For example, in late December, he claimed that Russia insists on control over Donbas in line with what was supposedly agreed in Anchorage.

At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was not informed of any agreements between the United States and Russia during that meeting, and there has been no official confirmation. Ukraine has no formal information about the details of the meeting between the US President and Russian leader Putin in Anchorage, but assumes that sensitive issues were discussed.

Zelenskyy also stated that the issue of control over the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant remains one of the most difficult points in the US peace plan for Ukraine. The sides are currently searching for a compromise.
