Russian leader Vladimir Putin has described the war against Ukraine as a "righteous fight for the future of Russian children," according to RIA Novosti.

Speaking at a ceremony marking Russia’s National Guard Day, Putin claimed that Russian forces are carrying out combat operations confidently on the front lines.

"This is a righteous fight for a peaceful, free and secure life for our children and grandchildren on our land. For the sacred, historical right of our people to speak their native language," Putin said.

He also added that through the war against Ukraine, Russians are preserving the "precepts and faith of their fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers."

Putin’s justifications

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly come up with absurd justifications for the war against Ukraine.

According to the Center for Countering Disinformation, the Kremlin leader is even trying to distort historical facts to make the start of the war against Ukraine appear more justified.

Putin derives the "root causes" of his aggression from these distorted historical narratives, as a result of which Ukrainian civilians continue to suffer.

Ukraine and Russia are currently continuing peace negotiations mediated by the United States. Russia is demanding the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbas.

Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Washington is ready to agree on security guarantees for Ukraine once the Ukrainian authorities give up Donbas.
