Putin intensifies attacks on Ukraine 'in despicable manner': Bessent threatens Russia with sanctions

The US will consider sanctions against Russia as Russian forces step up attacks on peaceful Ukrainian cities, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview with Fox News.
Commenting on the possibility of imposing sanctions on Russia, Bessent said that all options remain on the table.
"Since the phone call, when the European leaders and President Zelensky were at the White House the following Monday, (he, President of Russia, Vladimir Putin - ed.) has done the opposite of following through on what he indicated he wanted to do. As a matter of fact, he has, in a despicable, despicable manner, increased the bombing campaign," the Treasury Secretary said.
He added that options for new restrictions on Russia will be discussed this week.
Attacks on Ukraine
Last week, Russian forces carried out several massive attacks on Ukraine.
In particular, on the night of August 28, the Russian army used nearly 600 attack drones and 31 missiles. They mainly targeted Kyiv.
Russia struck a residential high-rise in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district. More than 20 people were killed, including four children.
Following this, the White House stated that Trump was displeased with the attack, but he was "not surprised."
