Protest against government: Georgia's Ambassador resigns over failed EU integration
Otar Berdzenishvili, the Georgian ambassador to Bulgaria, has reported on his Twitter account about his resignation due to the failed EU integration. This is the first such case in protest against the actions of the Georgian authorities.
The ambassador emphasized that he and his colleagues had spent two decades actively contributing to Georgia's Euro-Atlantic and European integration process.
"Our tireless efforts should not be undermined or compromised by any means," Berdzenishvili stated
The Georgian ambassador also expressed his support for the ongoing protests in Georgia, adding a hashtag opposing violence against peaceful demonstrators to his post.
Georgia's halt to EU integration
On Thursday, November 28, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, announced that the country refused to start negotiations with the European Union until the end of 2028.
In addition, the Georgian government rejected any budgetary subsidies from the EU, with the Prime Minister labeling EU grants and loans as tools of blackmail against Georgia.
Following the Prime Minister's statements, protests erupted in Tbilisi, leading to clashes with law enforcement. Security forces attempted to disperse demonstrators, resulting in arrests and injuries.
Dozens of Georgian ambassadors condemned the government's decision to suspend the country's integration into the EU. The joint statement was signed by more than 90 employees of the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
