Ukrainian, European, and US officials held a new discussion on the peace process. In particular, they talked about security guarantees and post-war prosperity for Ukraine, according to the US President's special envoy Steve Witkoff on Twitter (X) and Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Rustem Umerov.

Details of the discussion from Witkoff

Witkoff said that the US participants in the discussion included himself, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and US President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

Europe was represented by the UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, France’s National Security Adviser Emmanuel Bonne, and Germany’s National Security Adviser Günter Sautter.

According to Witkoff, Ukraine was represented by Rustem Umerov and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The American official explained that the goal was to discuss the next steps "in the European peace process."

"We focused on how to move the discussions forward in a practical way on behalf of Trump's peace process, including strengthening security guarantees and developing effective deconfliction mechanisms to help end the war and ensure it does not restart," Witkoff said.

He added that special attention was given to a package of measures for Ukraine’s prosperity — how to "continue defining, refining, and advancing these concepts." The parties also discussed "many additional details." Witkoff assured that this important work and coordination will continue in the new year.

What Umerov says

Umerov, for his part, said that he briefed Zelenskyy on the results of the phone call with US and European partners.

"We coordinated our positions and planned further meetings with European and American partners in January," he noted.

The Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council clarified that US partners will take part online in a meeting of national security advisers scheduled to take place in Ukraine on January 3.

Zelenskyy–Trump meeting

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently visited Florida and met with US President Donald Trump.

Following the meeting, the Ukrainian head of state said that the US peace plan had been agreed on by 90%. Disputed issues remain over territories and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

According to Zelenskyy, he also fully agreed with Trump on security guarantees.
