Milk is one of the most common allergens in the world. This product often causes allergies in young children that last a lifetime, according to the Instagram page of pediatrician Diana Protokovilo.

Is it possible to "outgrow" allergies

According to the doctor, most children "outgrow" milk allergy by the age of 6, but there is a small percentage of patients who have this allergy for life.

Most people who are allergic to cow's milk are also allergic to goat's milk and milk from other animals, as the proteins that cause an allergic reaction are very similar.

Milk allergy has different mechanisms. There is an immunological reaction to milk:

  • mediated by immunoglobulin E (IgE)
  • not mediated by IgE
  • mixed

Depending on the mechanism by which the allergy develops, the manifestations can be different.

If it is an immunoglobulin E-mediated reaction, the following symptoms occur:

  • acute urticaria (itchy rash)
  • swelling of the lips, tongue and eyelids
  • wheezing, cough, rhinorrhea, nasal congestion
  • vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea
  • manifestation of anaphylaxis

Symptoms can usually occur after drinking milk within the first 2 hours.

Reactions not mediated by IgE are manifested by:

  • streaks of blood in the stool
  • excessive amount of mucus in the stool, diarrhea
  • growth retardation
  • nausea, vomiting
  • constipation (at a slightly older age)

These symptoms occur a few hours after drinking milk, and often parents do not even associate them with the consumption of the product.

When children can be given milk for the first time

After reaching the age of 1, the baby's body is already formed and ready to absorb such a product as milk. But this is only if the child is lactose tolerant.

It is better to gradually introduce a new product into the diet in small doses to adequately assess the baby's condition.
