Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, believes that talking about potential elections right now is pointless, according to an interview with the Arab media outlet Al-Modon.

Budanov was asked whether presidential elections could be held in Ukraine in the event of a 60-day ceasefire, and whether he would run for head of state in that case.

"My task right now is to establish an effective negotiation process. Talking about elections under the current circumstances is pointless," said the Head of the President’s Office.

Elections in Ukraine

The topic of elections in Ukraine during the war became relevant again after US President Donald Trump began "doubting" Ukrainian democracy.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded by emphasizing that he is ready to hold presidential elections in the country, but under certain conditions. In particular, he wants a ceasefire to be ensured for the duration of the electoral process.

Russia, for its part, has stated that it is allegedly ready to ensure a halt to shelling only on the day of voting.

Additionally, holding elections in Ukraine during the war requires changes to the legislation. A special working group, including MPs and others, is currently working on this.

Earlier, Zelenskyy stated that he might seek a second presidential term if Russia’s war against Ukraine had not ended by the time of the elections.
