President of Ukraine makes statement regarding reduction of mobilization age
Currently, the Ukrainian government has no plans to lower the draft age to 18, although partners would like that, states President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy noted that partners would like the draft age in Ukraine to be lowered.
"We have mobilization starting at 25, and we currently don't see the need to introduce changes. I believe that, for now, it's dangerous," the president said.
According to him, "there is a tool for this."
"The Ministry of Defense has contracts, and there is the possibility to enlist voluntarily at an age younger than 25. The Ministry of Defense should offer special contracts, special conditions," Zelenskyy emphasized.
The president stressed that, at this time, there are no plans to start mobilization at 18.
Lowering the draft age in Ukraine
In April 2024, a law was signed to reduce the mobilization age from 27 to 25.
At the same time, it is important to note that the topic of mobilization at 18 is being discussed more actively in the public space. Specifically, this is being insisted upon by Western partners. However, the Ukrainian government is not ready to take such a step.
Currently, there are no initiatives in Ukraine to lower the draft age below 25.
