President of Portugal arrives in Kyiv on Independence Day
Portugal's President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has arrived in Kyiv for a two-day visit dedicated to celebrating the country's 32nd Independence Day anniversary, reported CNN.
At the Kyiv railway station, he stated his intention to show solidarity with Ukraine and to participate in the Independence Day celebrations.
"There are several goals. Firstly, it's a continuation of Portugal's presence. The Prime Minister has been here, the head of the Assembly of the Republic, the Minister of Foreign Affairs several times, and now the President of the Republic has arrived. Portugal demonstrates its solidarity in all areas," said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa
"Everything crucial - and everything fundamental at the moment - in Ukraine's life is also fundamental in Portugal's life," he added.
The President of Portugal announced that he would participate in celebrating Ukraine's 32nd Independence Day anniversary, emphasizing that "this year is even more special" due to the participation of representatives from other countries in the festivities. According to him, Ukraine's counteroffensive is underway to "consolidate its sovereignty."
Ukraine celebrates its 32nd Independence Day on August 24th. Lithuania's President Gitanas Nauseda has already arrived in Kyiv before the holiday.
There are no plans for large-scale events for Ukraine's Independence Day on August 24th in Kyiv this year. However, Khreshchatyk Street will be closed for a week. This is because the capital plans to host an exhibition of Russian army equipment that has been captured.
