A new earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale occurred near the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula. A tsunami threat has been announced for the Russian Far East region and the US, according to Russian sources.

The epicenter of the tremors was located in the sea, 93 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 123 km, the Kamchatka branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Geophysical Service reported.

Inside homes, furniture was shaking, chandeliers were swinging, and at the airport, vibrations nearly damaged the electronic display boards.

There is currently no information about casualties or damage.

Tsunami threat

A tsunami warning has been issued for the Kamchatka Peninsula, with 1.5-meter waves approaching the coast. All emergency services in the region have been placed on high alert.

In addition, the US Geological Survey has issued a tsunami warning due to the earthquake, and the Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations in the Sakhalin region has issued a similar warning for the Kuril Islands.

Earthquakes in the Kamchatka Region

This is already the third powerful earthquake in the Kamchatka Peninsula region in recent months.

The first earthquake, with a magnitude of 8.8, occurred on July 30 and was recognized as the strongest in over 70 years.

At that time, tsunami warnings were issued in many countries of the Pacific region, and the Krasheninnikov volcano on the peninsula erupted for the first time in 600 years.

The second strong tremors, measuring 7.7 in magnitude, occurred on September 13, 123 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
