Powerful magnetic storm looms: How to stay healthy during the solar surge
A powerful magnetic storm, reaching a red level, will hit the planet in the coming days. During this time, it is advisable to take care of your health, reduce activity, and try to spend less time in the sun.
What is known about this magnetic storm and how to protect your health is discussed by Meteoagent.
What is a magnetic storm
On the Sun, flares and explosions regularly occur, leading to the ejection of large amounts of solar energy into space. This energy consists of charged particles — protons and electrons — that can travel rapidly through space.
When these particles reach Earth's magnetosphere, they cause activity known as geomagnetic or solar storms. Depending on the storm's intensity and its K-index, various consequences may arise — from disruptions in satellite operations, GPS, and communications to worsening human health and the occurrence of auroras.
What is known about the upcoming storm
According to satellite systems NOAA, TESIS, and international meteorological laboratories, a moderate magnetic storm with a K-index of 4 affected Earth before the weekend, on July 19.
On Saturday, July 20, the storm will remain at a moderate level. By Sunday, its intensity is expected to rise to a red K-index level of 5. Such a storm may cause health issues and headaches.
Current forecasts suggest that this magnetic storm will be brief, and the situation should improve significantly by Monday, July 22.
How a magnetic storm affects people
Scientists worldwide have conducted numerous studies, some of which confirm a link between geomagnetic activity and deteriorating human health.
Common issues during these storms include:
- Headaches, migraines
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Rapid fatigue
- Daytime drowsiness
- Nighttime insomnia
- Concentration problems
- Mental fog
- Blood pressure fluctuations
- Cardiovascular issues
- Mood deterioration
- Increased anxiety
- Irritability
- Aggressive behavior
- Exacerbation of chronic illnesses
How to protect your body
During magnetic storms, doctors recommend reducing physical and emotional stress, resting more, and drinking plenty of water. Additionally:
- Maintain a regular daily schedule
- Get enough sleep (at least 7-9 hours)
- Exercise and take contrast showers
- Eat a balanced diet
- Drink sufficient water
- Avoid excessive coffee, energy drinks, alcohol, cigarettes, spicy and unhealthy foods
- Ventilate your living space
- Spend time outdoors
- Seek medical advice if necessary
