Populists and radicals seek to undermine Europe and its unity, von der Leyen says
Head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen accused populists, nationalists, and radicals of attempting to undermine peaceful coexistence and unity in Europe, according to The Guardian.
"They (populists, nationalists, and radicals - Ed.) want to trample on our values, and they want to destroy our Europe. And we, the EPP, will never let that happen," she said at the EPP conference in Bucharest.
Von der Leyen also promised to increase financial and military aid to Ukraine.
"Prosperity, security, democracy – this is what people care about in these difficult times. In times of change, Europe has your back," she added.
According to her, "the world is as dangerous as it has been for generations," and the "friends" of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin are trying to undermine democracy.
"They are spreading hate from behind their keyboards. Let there be no doubt what’s at stake in this election (for the head of the EC)," she added.
The official promised to develop the EU economy, stop the activities of smugglers, strengthen competitiveness, and support farmers amid rising living costs.
