Pope Leo XIV has called for prayers to end the war after a Russian strike on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra on June 15, according to his post on X.
"There has been distressing news about the war in Ukraine, which keeps expanding. There are many innocent victims, rescue workers killed, and churches and cultural heritage sites devastated by flames," the Pope said.
Leo XIV stressed that he stands in solidarity with the wounded and those who mourn their loved ones, as well as those "who continue to serve life with courage amid violence."
What is known about the strike on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra
On the night of June 15, Russia carried out a massive attack on Kyiv, using 60 missiles and strike drones.
One of the targets was the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. A drone strike on the roof of the church caused a fire.
Rescuers managed to quickly extinguish the blaze, but the shrine was damaged. In particular, the iconostasis, wall paintings, and frescoes were affected.
After the strike, ancient icons, antimension cloths, and other valuable liturgical relics were evacuated from the Lavra complex as they were at risk of damage. The site also temporarily suspended visitor access.
Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) believe the strike on the Lavra had two objectives. According to experts, the Russian President wanted to achieve not only a military but also a psychological effect.
