Pope Leo XIV expressed his willingness to take on the role of mediator in peace talks between the warring countries. Ukraine is grateful for such wise words, says Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"I am grateful to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV for his wise words about the Holy See's willingness to take on the role of mediator in restoring peace around the world. Peace is the dearest wish of millions of our people," Zelenskyy responded.

He noted that Ukraine hopes for the restoration of a just peace and is doing everything in its power to achieve it.

"We appreciate the Pontiff's wise statement and reaffirm our commitment to genuine peace efforts, including a complete ceasefire and a face-to-face meeting at the highest level between Ukraine and Russia," the President concluded.

Pope Leo XIV offers mediation to warring countries

Earlier today, Pope Leo XIV offered to mediate between warring sides around the world. The statement came during an audience with representatives of 23 Eastern Christian Churches.

In his address, the Pope also called on the leaders of the warring countries to meet and begin negotiations to make the weapons "fall silent."

On May 8, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected the new Pope and chose the name Leo XIV.

He made history as the first Pope with American citizenship.

RBC-Ukraine has published a separate report compiling everything currently known about the new Pope.

The first conversation between the Pope and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already taken place — it occurred on May 12.
