Popcorn has long been associated with movie theaters and sharing a bucket of treats with a loved one. However, scientific data indicate that this simple corn product is one of the healthiest snacks when prepared correctly. Ukrainian dietitian and professor Oleh Shvets explains on Facebook seven health benefits of air-popped corn.

Why popcorn is healthy

It contains more fiber than many grains, and in terms of antioxidants per weight, popcorn even surpasses fruits and vegetables.

Two servings (16 g) of air-popped popcorn contain only 62 calories, approximately 2.5 g of fiber, 2 g of protein, and less than 1 g of fat, making it an ideal option for those monitoring weight and metabolism.

Seven scientifically proven reasons to include popcorn in your diet

Improves digestion

Fiber feeds beneficial bacteria and helps prevent constipation. A healthy gut means stronger immunity and a better mood.

Supports weight management

Popcorn digests slowly and keeps you full for longer, while the ferulic acid it contains helps combat obesity.

Stabilizes blood sugar levels

Whole grains, including popcorn, prevent sharp glucose spikes. This is important for people with diabetes or prediabetes.

Reduces cancer risk

Antioxidants and fiber reduce oxidative stress and protect DNA. Popcorn consumption may lower the risk of colon and stomach cancer.

Helps normalize blood pressure

Ferulic acid exhibits anti-inflammatory effects, and dietary fiber is associated with lower blood pressure.

Lowers cholesterol levels

Soluble fiber literally removes "bad" cholesterol from the body, reducing the risk of heart attack and atherosclerosis.

Supports brain health

Research shows that ferulic acid may slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease, and a diet rich in whole grains can improve cognitive function.

Not all popcorn is healthy

Movie theater popcorn, like most store-bought varieties, contains salt, sugar, flavorings, and trans fats, losing all of its health benefits.

The healthiest option is homemade popcorn:

  • Without oil or with a minimal amount of olive or avocado oil
  • Without added sugar
  • With spices or light seasonings

Most store-bought microwave popcorn contains chemical additives and sodium, so it's best to buy plain kernels and cook them in an air popper, on the stove, or in the microwave.
