Polish MiG-29 fighter jets intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea. This is the second such incident in the last two days, according to Polish Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
"Today, MiG-29s intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea, just like yesterday," Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
According to him, the key threat comes from the east, from Russia. There is pressure on the Polish-Belarusian border, where attempts to cross the border are made every day. 5,000 soldiers are stationed there, participating in operations daily, and Polish airspace is being violated from there.
Il-20
The Il-20 is a Soviet aircraft based on the Il-18, which is used for electronic reconnaissance and electronic warfare. The aircraft is equipped with a side-looking radar, an infrared scanner, and various sensors for gathering information.
This aircraft was the first in the USSR to combine a complex of various aerial reconnaissance means operating on different principles of data acquisition. It was produced from 1968 to 1976 and is currently in service with Russia's Aerospace Forces.
Background
Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 aircraft conducting reconnaissance in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.
The Russian Il-20 aircraft was conducting a reconnaissance mission in international airspace without a flight plan and with its transponder turned off. However, the aircraft did not violate Polish airspace.
