Poland no longer intends to be a mere observer in matters of nuclear security, according to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The Polish Prime Minister announces this before a government meeting, stressing that Warsaw seeks to strengthen its role in the European security system.
According to Tusk, the issue of cooperation is being discussed not only with Paris but also with other European partners who are also interested in joining this initiative. Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron proposed expanding the French nuclear deterrence system and involving several European countries in the cooperation, including Poland, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, and Greece.
The Polish Prime Minister stresses that the country plans to act together with its allies, but at the same time seeks to develop its own capabilities in the field of security. According to him, in the future, Warsaw wants to be ready for maximum autonomous action in matters of strategic deterrence.
The French proposal provides for several forms of cooperation. In particular, this could involve joint military exercises, demonstrations of nuclear capabilities, and the potential deployment of French strategic air units on the territory of partner states. Paris believes that the dispersal of such forces across different European countries could complicate the calculations of potential adversaries.
At the same time, Macron clearly emphasized that the decision on the possible use of French nuclear weapons would remain the exclusive prerogative of the French president. Thus, partners will be able to participate in the deterrence system, but without a joint mechanism for deciding on the use of the nuclear arsenal.
The issue of cooperation in the field of nuclear deterrence is expected to be one of the topics of discussion at the upcoming nuclear energy summit in Paris, where Tusk plans to hold consultations with Macron and other European leaders.
