Poland significantly increases ammunition production. Four companies of the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ) will receive $665 million from the Ministry of State Assets for a project to build three new factories, informs Reuters.

The ammunition factories will produce 155mm artillery shells. Demand for these shells has surged sharply since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

According to Reuters, PGZ aims to increase its annual ammunition production capacity to 150,000 shells within two to three years.

"From 150,000 shells upwards from 2028, or from the end of 2027. This is our goal," PGZ head Adam Leszkiewicz on Wednesday.

He added that current production capacity is considered "insufficient" and urgently needs expansion.

"Our goal is to scale up as soon as possible domestic production of this kind of ammunition which is key on the modern battlefield," said Minister of State Assets Jakub Jaworowski.

How much ammunition Poland produces

Currently, the Polish company PGZ manufactures about 30,000 shells per year. Thanks to the new funding, this volume is planned to increase more than fivefold. All processes will be carried out in Poland to avoid dependence on imported components.

Poland is a NATO country that spends the highest percentage of its GDP on defense. This year, 4.7% of the state budget is allocated to the military. Previously, a significant part of the funds was directed toward purchasing weapons abroad, including from the US and South Korea.

The government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk is now shifting focus to domestic production. This move aligns with broader European efforts to reduce reliance on the US and other foreign military suppliers.
