In the first half of 2025, Poland had planned to host the EU-Ukraine and EU-US summits. However, now the country’s president, Andrzej Duda, has announced the cancellation of these events, according to the Chancellery of President Andrzej Duda.

Duda announced the cancellation of both summits during a meeting of Poland's National Security Council on Monday, February 24. The President of Poland expressed his disappointment over this decision.

"I regret that the EU-US and EU-Ukraine summits have been canceled in Poland," Duda said.

Meeting on ending the war in Ukraine

According to the Chancellery of the President, the National Security Council meeting was held in connection with the beginning of the peace process aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

During the meeting, Andrzej Duda emphasized that Poland supports Ukraine in this process politically, militarily, and in humanitarian efforts.

"Our position remains unchanged: this war must end with a just peace—one that guarantees that Russia will never again attack any country. This also means restoring the rule of international law," the president added.

Poland and the US

At the same time, Andrzej Duda stated that Poland remains an extremely important ally of the United States. Therefore, there are no plans to reduce the American military presence in the country.

"Poland must actively voice its position on security issues concerning Europe. Poland’s presidency in the EU Council should serve as an opportunity to raise topics related to the security of the EU and strengthen transatlantic ties," Duda noted.

Poland’s EU presidency

It is worth recalling that Duda had previously initiated plans to organize EU-Ukraine and EU-US summits during Poland’s presidency in the EU Council in the first half of 2025. According to the president, during this period, Poland should focus on deepening relations between the EU and the US, as well as supporting Ukraine’s European integration and reconstruction.

Poland officially took over the presidency of the EU Council on January 1, 2025.

Additionally, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that Poland will break the deadlock developed in recent months regarding Ukraine’s European integration. During its presidency, Poland plans to work closely with Kyiv and other partners to accelerate the accession process.
