The structure is a four-meter-high metal mesh fence installed along a technical road, which will be reinforced with barbed wire and additional security elements. A separate two-meter fence is also planned on the forest side to prevent harm to animals.
Work has simultaneously started at five locations along the border. According to the Border Guard, construction materials were purchased in advance, and the work is being carried out by engineering military units.
"We started with locations that are important for us. We identified them based on potential crossing points by people who want to enter our country illegally," said Commander of the Podlaskie Border Guard unit, General Sławomir Klekotka.
According to him, the new infrastructure is intended to slow down people attempting to enter Poland illegally and give border guards more time to respond.
The barrier is expected to be built along the entire 186-kilometer section of the border in the Podlaskie Voivodeship. The works are scheduled to be completed by the end of spring.
It should be noted that Poland recently said it continues reinforced border controls on its borders with Germany and Lithuania due to threats from Belarus.
As a result, instead of the free movement typical of the Schengen Area, travelers must now undergo strict checks.
